Boxing Legend Larry Holmes and Marmalade Blew My Mind

As a guy of a certain age, I became interested in professional boxing during the golden age of heavyweights, the 1970’s and early 80’s. Back then it was mostly known as Prizefighting, which I think is cool as heck, and fighters fought championship fights for 15 rounds. 15 rounds! Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier got everyone’s attention but it was the supporting cast of characters that drove the sport to levels of popularity that today’s boxing fans couldn’t imagine. Among this talented group were George Foreman, Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, Earnie Shavers, Trevor Berbick and one of my personal favorites, Larry Holmes.

Larry Holmes Signed Everlast Boxing Glove

Larry Holmes was big and fast and probably had the most wicked left jab in boxing history. He came into his own in 1978 when he beat WBC champ Ken Norton in a 15 round split decision that changed everything for Holmes. (Years later in an interview he was asked “Who hit you harder? Ali or Tyson?” He responded “Neither. Kenny Norton hit me so hard that it still hurts.”)

Larry Holmes retained his heavyweight crown for 5 years and went 48-0. That’s right, he fought the baddest of the bad 48 times and never lost. He ended up 69-6 and was the second longest reigning heavyweight champ after Joe Louis. Wow.

But you know why I like this guy the most? Today, in 2014, he’s a sometimes singer. A singer in his own band! Yep, Larry Holmes and Marmalade is a thing. Watch them here singing Brick House. I make no judgements because its just some guys having a good time, but c'mon, what’s not to love about Larry Holmes?
